Growing cannabis in Monterey: the air turns damper each month until harvest

Monterey's summer does not dry out as it goes. It gets wetter. In 2024, humidity averaged 82 percent in June, 83 in July, 85 in August and 86 in September, higher than January's 80.

A plant on the natural season builds its buds in the dampest of the months measured, and only then does the air ease, to 69 percent in October. So which month will your buds spend their last weeks in?

California home grow rules (as of October 2026)

Adults 21 and over: yes. Plant limit: 6 living plants per private residence, however many adults live there.

Locked space, not visible from a public place; cities and counties can set reasonable rules for indoor grows (but cannot ban them) and may ban outdoor grows; a landlord may prohibit growing on a rental. Source: Department of Cannabis Control; conditions: Prop 64 text as passed in 2016 (H&S Code 11362.2 and 11362.45). Local rules (landlords, HOAs, city codes) can add more; this is a summary, not legal advice.

Running a Monterey grow room in wet air

Pick the season before you pick the gear. Indoors, nothing forces a flower room to follow the outdoor calendar. A heated house usually runs dry in winter, because warming cold air lowers its humidity. A tent in a heated room can ripen buds from December to March in drier air than a summer garage offers.

A summer run needs more help. A garage, or a room with the windows open, breathes the outdoor air, so a tent there starts from the same damp. Size a dehumidifier for that whole room and set it on a humidistat (a switch that holds a chosen humidity). Leave it running at lights-off, when the tent cools and its air reads damper. Thin the inner leaves so air reaches the middle of each plant.

Warmth is the other gap. The Monterey station, 0.9 miles from town, puts afternoons at about 66 to 71°F from June through October and counts about 3 afternoons a year at 90°F or hotter. The lamp is the tent's main heat source, and its warmth lowers the humidity too. Put the exhaust fan on a thermostat so it vents when the canopy warms, not around the clock. An air conditioner would sit idle most of the year here, so it is no humidity plan.

Outdoors on the Monterey coast

State law caps a private residence at 6 living plants, however many adults are in it, grown where a lock secures them and no one in a public place can see them. Cities and counties can put reasonable rules on indoor grows, without banning them, and can ban outdoor grows, so read the rules that apply to your address first.

Where it is allowed, start seeds indoors March 4 to 18 and move plants out from April 15. Frost is rarely the problem, but nights average 50°F or warmer only from June 5 to October 27, so April plants start slowly. A photoperiod plant (one that flowers as nights lengthen) that ripens in mid to late October finishes in drier air, at the price of cooler nights. One that finishes in September ripens in the wettest air of the months measured. Choose open, mold-resistant varieties either way.

Monterey grow notes, kept private

Between the Tuesday farmers market downtown and a walk from Alvarado Street to Cannery Row, a Monterey conversation can easily turn to gardens. How you finally kept September buds clean in this air is a lesson you paid for, and you decide who hears it.

In Canna GLAP, each grow record is encrypted on the phone itself, and the copy that uploads cannot be read without your passphrase, which we never see. Breaking into our servers would yield coded grow entries and no way to open them. The encryption guards the journal, not a lamp glowing through a window or a smell on a still evening.

What is encrypted: your plants, notes, photos, feed logs and harvests. What is not: account details (such as your email, name and plan), a grow name or town if you type one, your team, and your sensors' names. The full list: what a hacker would get.

Questions growers in Monterey ask

Is Monterey too damp to grow cannabis?

Not if you plan for it. Outdoor air stayed above 80 percent from June through September in 2024, so a summer flower room needs a dehumidifier and open, mold-resistant plants outdoors.

Does it freeze in Monterey?

Almost never. The station averages less than one freezing night a year, and average nights stay at 45°F or warmer from February 3 to December 8.

When should outdoor cannabis finish in Monterey?

Mid to late October suits the air, which averaged 69 percent that month against a damper September. The cost is cooler nights, which average under 50°F after October 27.
