Grow cannabis in Eureka, CA
Eureka seldom gets warm, and it rarely gets dry. On the Humboldt coast, even August, the warmest month, averages a 64°F high. In 2024 that same month averaged 91 percent humidity, the dampest of the months shown, January included.
In 2024, a grow here got chill and damp together through the whole season. What does your tent need when the warmest weeks are also the dampest ones?
Adults 21 and over: yes. Plant limit: 6 living plants per private residence, however many adults live there.
Locked space, not visible from a public place; cities and counties can set reasonable rules for indoor grows (but cannot ban them) and may ban outdoor grows; a landlord may prohibit growing on a rental. Source: Department of Cannabis Control; conditions: Prop 64 text as passed in 2016 (H&S Code 11362.2 and 11362.45). Local rules (landlords, HOAs, city codes) can add more; this is a summary, not legal advice.
Heat is the one thing you will not fight. The Eureka weather office station, 0.6 miles away at 20 feet, records no truly hot afternoons in a typical year. Average highs run from about 55°F in winter to the low-to-mid 60s in August and September, so your lamp is the main heat source in every month. Running it overnight, when the room is coldest, makes sense all year here, not only in winter.
Warmth helps with the damp too. Warming air lowers its relative humidity, so damp outdoor air reads lower once the lamp heats it. Plants keep breathing water back out, though, and a flowering tent can climb fast. A dehumidifier on a humidistat (a switch that runs it at a level you set) belongs in a Eureka flower room from the first week of bloom. An air conditioner adds little, since a cool room gives it almost nothing to do.
Nights average 50°F or warmer only from about June 14 to September 20, and December lows average 40°F. A tent in a garage or an unheated room loses heat fast once the lamp goes off. Insulate the floor under it, and put gentle warmth under seedlings and clones, which root slowly in cold soil.
January's outdoor air averaged 84 percent in 2024. In a heated house that fades, but an unheated garage or damp room holds onto it, and there the dehumidifier earns its keep in winter as well.
Heater safety: use one with tip-over and overheat shutoff, plug it straight into a wall outlet (not an extension cord or power strip), and keep it a few feet from tent fabric and plants.

California allows 6 living plants per private residence, however many adults live there, in a locked space that people in a public place cannot see. Cities and counties may set rules for indoor grows and can prohibit outdoor ones, so look up the rules where you live first. If outdoor plants are permitted, start seeds March 11 to March 25 and set them out from April 22, once nights average 45°F. Frost has typically passed by February 22, and it comes after March 23 only one spring in ten.
From there the calendar gives about 207 days before an early frost, the kind that lands by November 15 about one fall in ten. Warmth runs out first, and in 2024 the air never dried. Photoperiods (plants that flower as nights lengthen) ripen in September and October, when 2024's air averaged 90 and 88 percent humidity and October nights about 47°F, conditions bud rot favors. Choose fast-finishing, airy, mold-resistant plants. If a greenhouse fits the state's conditions, it can add warmth and let you control the airflow. Autoflowers finish sooner, but they ripen in July or August, which in 2024 was no drier.
| Last spring frost | Feb 22 in a typical year, Mar 23 to be safe (later only 1 year in 10) |
|---|---|
| First fall frost | Dec 7 typical, as early as Nov 15 (1 year in 10) |
| Frost-free season | about 293 days |
| Nights stay 50°F or warmer | Jun 14 to Sep 20 |
| Start seeds or clones indoors | Mar 11 to Mar 25 |
| Move plants outdoors | Apr 22 or later |
Whether it is a fellow grower at the weekly farmers market or a friend over dinner in Old Town, you decide how much of your last harvest to talk about.
Canna GLAP turns each grow record into code on your phone, and that coded copy is the only one our servers receive. A break-in would hand someone unreadable records with no key attached. The app keeps your notes private. A neighbor can still smell a flowering plant; stopping that is the carbon filter's job.
What is encrypted: your plants, notes, photos, feed logs and harvests. What is not: account details (such as your email, name and plan), a grow name or town if you type one, your team, and your sensors' names. The full list: what a hacker would get.
Not indoors, if you run a dehumidifier through flower and keep air moving. Outdoors it is hard: buds ripen in fall air that stayed damp right through October in 2024.
From April 22, when nights start to average 45°F, if local rules allow outdoor plants. Spring nights stay cool after that, so young plants grow slowly at first.
Often, in a garage or unheated room. Winter nights sit near 40°F, and even summer nights stay in the low 50s, so the lamp alone may not keep roots warm with the lights off.
