Growing cannabis in Cerritos: when the night does little to cool the tent

Cerritos weather rarely strays far from the middle. In August the average afternoon reaches about 87°F and the average night drops only to about 66, a gap of about 20 degrees. In January the gap is about 22. Mild nights all year mean mild help for a hot grow room.

That is easy to like in winter. In late summer it raises a harder question: if the night will not cool your tent, what will?

California home grow rules (as of October 2026)

Adults 21 and over: yes. Plant limit: 6 living plants per private residence, however many adults live there.

Locked space, not visible from a public place; cities and counties can set reasonable rules for indoor grows (but cannot ban them) and may ban outdoor grows; a landlord may prohibit growing on a rental. Source: Department of Cannabis Control; conditions: Prop 64 text as passed in 2016 (H&S Code 11362.2 and 11362.45). Local rules (landlords, HOAs, city codes) can add more; this is a summary, not legal advice.

A Cerritos tent with little help from the night

Move the lamps to the dark hours anyway. From July through September, average nights sit in the mid 60s, still cooler than afternoons in the mid to upper 80s, so lights on at night keep lamp heat out of the warmest hours. Just do not count on intake air alone: a garage tent pulls in mid 60s air even on a good night, so size the exhaust fan for the lamps' full heat.

Real heat comes late. The Fullerton airport station, 5 miles away, logs about 39 afternoons that reach 90°F in an average year, with about 9 each in August and September. On those days an air conditioner pulls a closed garage back into range, drying the air as it cools.

Otherwise, the damp stays put. Outdoor humidity averaged 66 to 69 percent from June through October in 2024, and on a warm, still night an air conditioner sits idle, so it cannot be the whole humidity plan. In flower, give the tent its own dehumidifier and keep air moving after lights out, when the tent cools and its humidity climbs.

Winter is where the narrow swing pays you back. December, the coldest month, still averages nights near 46°F, and the station sees a freezing night about once every three years. Lamps through the coldest hours usually keep a winter tent in range. January's 75 percent outdoor reading counts only in an unheated, damp room; a heated house dries it out.

Outdoor plants in Cerritos

Under state law you may keep 6 living plants per private residence, however many adults live there, grown in a locked space out of sight from anywhere public. Local governments can set reasonable rules for indoor grows too, and may ban outdoor ones outright, so check what the local rules for your address allow first.

Where it is allowed, sow photoperiod seeds indoors between March 4 and 18, then set plants out from April 15; autoflowers need only about seven days inside first. Nothing on the calendar stops the plants: average nights hold at 50°F or warmer from March 2 to November 20. The risk is the finish. Buds ripening in September and October sit in that same damp air, with nights from the upper 50s to the mid 60s, warm and humid together. Open up each plant's interior, space them well, and check the thickest colas after still mornings.

A planned suburb, a private grow

Cerritos is a carefully planned city, and a neighbor whose yard backs onto yours may notice more than you would like. Whether it is that household or a grower you meet at the International Street Fair in nearby Artesia, how your plants are doing is your business. Encryption keeps records private; a smell drifting over a wall is still on you.

Your Canna GLAP journal is encrypted on the phone before upload, and only your passphrase can open it. Break into our servers and you would leave with grow records reduced to noise, and nothing that could decode them. The dehumidifier settings that saved an October harvest remain your own work.

What is encrypted: your plants, notes, photos, feed logs and harvests. What is not: account details (such as your email, name and plan), a grow name or town if you type one, your team, and your sensors' names. The full list: what a hacker would get.

Questions growers in Cerritos ask

Should I run grow lights at night in Cerritos?

From July through September, usually yes. The night schedule still dodges the afternoon peak, but a warm summer night leaves most of the cooling to the exhaust fan.

Does it ever freeze in Cerritos?

Hardly ever. The Fullerton airport station averages about one freezing night every three years, and no month's typical night falls below 45°F.

Do I need a dehumidifier for a Cerritos grow?

For flowering, very likely. Outdoor air ran in the upper 60s from June through October in 2024, and an air conditioner barely runs on mild nights.
