Grow cannabis in Boston, MA
Boston growers tend to worry about winter. The harder month for a cannabis plant is September. Humidity averages 75 percent, nights cool into the upper 50s, and dense flowers hold onto moisture the way a wool coat does.
If your last harvest had a gray spot deep in a cola, was it bad luck, or was it the calendar?
Adults 21 and over: yes. Plant limit: 6 per adult; 12 per residence.
Primary residence; not visible from a public place; in an area with a lock or other security device. Source: MGL c.94G s.7; conditions: s.13. Local rules (landlords, HOAs, city codes) can add more; this is a summary, not legal advice.
Late summer and fall carry the most moisture of the months measured: August averages 77 percent, September 75 and October 72. Indoors, that air comes in through every window and vent. A tent in a triple-decker basement or a Somerville spare room needs a dehumidifier that runs through late flower, an exhaust fan that keeps going when the lights go off, and enough space between plants that air can reach the center of each one. Cooler, wetter dark periods are when bud rot starts, so watch the hours after lights-out most of all.
Winter is the easier problem, but it is real. January averages a low of 23°F, and Boston sees about 92 freezing nights a year. A basement tent can run cold at the floor even when the room above is comfortable. Raise pots off the concrete, warm seedlings with a heat mat, and let the lights run through the coldest stretch of the night.
Summer heat barely registers here. July averages an 82°F high and about 6 days at 90°F, so most Boston tents need ventilation more than air conditioning. Spend your money on air movement and moisture control, and the plants will tell you it was the right call.

Massachusetts allows home plants only at your primary residence, in an area with a lock or other security device, and not visible from a public place. A locked greenhouse or a screened, secured yard can work. The last frost typically passes by April 4, but cool ocean air keeps nights from averaging 45°F until about April 29, which is the real date to move plants outside. Seeds or clones should start indoors from March 18 to April 1.
From there you have about 183 outdoor days, and the first frost usually waits until November 9 (as early as October 29 one year in ten). Time is not the issue. Wet fall air is. Choose strains bred for mold resistance, prune for airflow, and be ready to harvest a few days early when a run of damp weather sets in.
| Last spring frost | Apr 4 in a typical year, Apr 17 to be safe (later only 1 year in 10) |
|---|---|
| First fall frost | Nov 9 typical, as early as Oct 29 (1 year in 10) |
| Frost-free season | about 218 days |
| Nights stay 50°F or warmer | May 15 to Oct 8 |
| Start seeds or clones indoors | Mar 18 to Apr 1 |
| Move plants outdoors | Apr 29 or later |
Share an apartment in Boston or Cambridge and a roommate may well see the tent. What the tent taught you is a different thing. Most grow apps keep exactly that on a server their company can read.
Canna GLAP encrypts the record on the phone first and uploads it second, the whole grow journal. A breach of our servers would expose grow records only in scrambled form, with no key to read them. What each wet fall taught you belongs to you.
What is encrypted: your plants, notes, photos, feed logs and harvests. What is not: account details (such as your email, name and plan), a grow name or town if you type one, your team, and your sensors' names. The full list: what a hacker would get.
April 29 or later. Frost usually passes by early April, but nights do not average 45°F until the end of the month, and cold nights stall young plants.
Expect it: humidity averages 75 percent in September and 72 in October. Run a dehumidifier and exhaust through the dark period indoors, and outdoors choose mold-resistant strains and prune for airflow.
